Healthy eating has somehow become remarkably complicated.
There are eating plans telling us to cut out carbohydrates, avoid fat, eat more fat, fast for half the day, count everything on our plate or buy ingredients we’ve never heard of.
It can make an ordinary sandwich feel like a major life decision.
But eating well doesn’t need to be complicated.
For most of us, a healthier way of eating can begin with something much simpler: choosing mostly everyday foods, adding some variety and enjoying the occasional treat without turning it into a crisis.
Start With Ordinary Food
You don’t need a cupboard full of expensive health foods to eat well.
Fruit, vegetables, eggs, wholegrain bread, oats, yoghurt, fish, chicken, beans, rice, nuts and other familiar foods can form the basis of plenty of nutritious meals.
Even frozen and tinned foods have their place.
Frozen vegetables are handy to keep on standby, while tinned tomatoes, beans, tuna and fruit can make quick meals much easier.
Healthy food doesn’t have to be fashionable. Sometimes the simple foods people have eaten for generations are still some of the best choices.
Think About What You Can Add
Healthy eating often focuses on everything we’re supposedly doing wrong.
Too much this. Not enough that. Never eat those.
A much easier approach is to think about what you can add.
Could you add some vegetables to dinner?
A piece of fruit with lunch?
Some salad to a sandwich?
A handful of nuts for a snack?
Improving a meal doesn’t always mean removing something from it. Adding something nutritious can be an easy place to start.
Keep Easy Meals Up Your Sleeve
Nobody feels enthusiastic about preparing an elaborate healthy meal every night.
That’s why having a few simple favourites can make such a difference.
An omelette with vegetables, chicken and salad, soup with wholegrain toast, grilled fish with vegetables or a quick stir-fry can all be on the table without turning dinner into a two-hour production.
Keep a few ingredients in the freezer and pantry for the nights when you’re tired or plans change.
Healthy eating becomes much easier when the easy option is also a reasonably good one.
You Don’t Have to Eat Perfectly
There is room in a healthy life for cake.
And chocolate.
And takeaway.
And whatever else you genuinely enjoy.
One indulgent meal doesn’t undo weeks of ordinary nutritious meals any more than eating one salad suddenly transforms your health.
What you do most of the time matters far more than what you do occasionally.
Food should nourish us, but it is also part of celebrations, family traditions, travel and simple enjoyment.
There is no prize for eating perfectly.
Pay Attention to Hunger
Sometimes we eat because we’re hungry.
Sometimes we eat because it’s lunchtime.
And sometimes we find ourselves standing in front of the fridge because we’re bored and apparently expect something exciting to have appeared since the last time we looked.
Before reaching for something, take a moment to notice whether you’re actually hungry.
You don’t need to analyse every mouthful. Simply becoming a little more aware of why you’re eating can help you understand your habits.
Make Healthy Choices Convenient
We tend to eat what is easy to grab.
So make the foods you’d like to eat more often easy to reach.
Keep fruit where you can see it. Have simple ingredients available for quick meals. Portion leftovers into the freezer. Wash salad ingredients when you bring them home if that makes them easier to use later.
You don’t need extraordinary willpower when your kitchen is already working in your favour.
Keep It Simple
Eating well isn’t about following every new food trend or creating perfect meals seven days a week.
It’s about the overall pattern.
Choose plenty of ordinary nutritious foods.
Enjoy some variety.
Drink enough water.
Have treats without guilt.
And don’t panic when dinner occasionally comes from a takeaway container.
A healthy way of eating should fit into your life — not take it over.
Because the best eating habits aren’t the ones that look impressive for a fortnight.
They’re the ones you can comfortably live with for years.
