Say Yes to Something You’d Normally Say No To

Group of adults enjoying a new social experience together
Sometimes one little yes can lead to a very good day.

Sometimes the easiest word in the English language is no.

Want to come along?

No, I think I’ll stay home.

Want to try this?

No, that’s not really my thing.

Interested in joining us?

Maybe next time.

There’s nothing wrong with saying no. In fact, sometimes it’s exactly the right answer.

But every now and then, saying yes to something you’d normally avoid can lead to a surprisingly good day.

We Get Comfortable With What We Know

Routine makes life easy.

We know which places we like, which people we enjoy being around and how we prefer to spend our spare time.

The trouble is that comfortable can gradually become predictable.

You don’t have to turn your life upside down to change that.

Sometimes you just need to say yes once.

Accept the Invitation

Maybe someone invites you to a community event, barbecue, market, trivia night or local show.

Your first instinct might be to stay home.

Before automatically declining, ask yourself why.

If the only reason is I don’t normally do things like that, perhaps that’s exactly why you should give it a go.

You can always leave early.

Try the Thing You Think Isn’t for You

We make assumptions about ourselves all the time.

“I’m not artistic.”

“I don’t like dancing.”

“I’m not an outdoors person.”

“I’d never enjoy that.”

But how long has it been since you actually tested that theory?

You may still hate it.

That’s allowed.

But occasionally you’ll discover that the thing you were certain wasn’t for you is actually rather enjoyable.

Meet Some New People

Trying something different often puts us around people we wouldn’t normally meet.

Join a workshop. Attend a community event. Have a chat with somebody at the local markets. Accept an invitation from a neighbour.

Not every new person will become a lifelong friend.

They don’t need to.

Sometimes a good conversation with someone different from you is enough to make the day interesting.

Keep Your Yes Sensible

Saying yes doesn’t mean ignoring your instincts or doing something unsafe.

We’re talking about stretching your comfort zone, not launching yourself out of an aeroplane because Dave from next door thinks it would be hilarious.

You still get to choose.

The idea is simply to notice when habit — rather than genuine dislike or concern — is making the decision for you.

One Little Yes Can Lead Somewhere Unexpected

Some of life’s best experiences begin with a decision that could easily have gone the other way.

A new friendship.

A hobby.

A favourite place.

A funny story you’ll tell for years.

Or simply an unexpectedly enjoyable afternoon.

So the next time you’re offered an opportunity and your automatic answer is no, give yourself a moment before you say it.

You don’t have to say yes to everything.

Just occasionally say yes to something different.

You might be very glad you did.
